Towards Content Based English Language Learning And Content And Language Integrated Learning

Author The profile of the English language learner is changing, those that come to our school of English aged 17 and 18 will no longer be struggling pre-intermediate students looking to banish the ghosts of grammatically intensive classes and insecurities plaguing their communicative ability. As teachers we will no longer be able to merely put learners into pairs give them a topic and watch them enjoy the process of learning. Surely an over simplification of the role of the teacher in the English language classroom process I hear you say, and a statement that does not do justice to the sophistication of English Language Learning pedagogy, methodology and the years of research that has gone into answering the fundamental question: How do people learn English? And yes you are correct, however, it does serve the purpose of illustrating the point that what previously has been the norm, may not be sufficient to meet the need of the next generation of learners who are coming to our school of English to improve their level.
The reason for this is simple, dictated by Europe wide and national government policy around the world, learners are beginning to learn English in their home countries, en masse, from a younger age. They have a five year head start on the generation that preceded them, no longer are they beginning their second language acquisition as they reach the end of what we would call primary school, they are starting at the beginning of the school cycle, which means they are learning English from the age of 4 or 5 years, instead of 9 or 10 years. The impact of this will be, (and it is starting to filter through now), that our 17 and 18 year old English Language Learners will be competent, confident users of the language (B2 on the Common European Framework or upper intermediate) and, as a consequence of their increased level and their perceived goal to achieve a higher level of English (C1), their needs will be vastly different.

There is no single definitive list of the five most complex languages to learn. Ultimately it is a matter of opinion, since everyone learns differently. In addition, the ease with which you can learn an extra language depends on your first language. An English person learning Chinese would have to learn an entirely new alphabet as well as the vocabulary and grammar, which is inevitably harder than if they were to learn French, for example, which uses the same alphabet as their mother tongue.
For those whose first language uses the Western alphabet, Chinese is arguably one of the most complex languages to learn. Although many people are fascinated by Chinese script and the beauty of its lettering, learning enough of the ideograms to become practically literate proves very challenging, because of the sheer number of characters. It has been suggested that a Mandarin speaker takes seven or eight years to be able to write and read 3,000 characters, while Spanish and French speakers can achieve this in half the time. Additionally, Chinese does not have an alphabet in the Western sense. Instead, it is made up of components, which combine in countless different ways to form characters. They can also be distorted to mean different things. In short, learning the language simply requires a great deal of patience and hard work.

Learning a second language is often greatly underestimated. The Evolution Of English
The history of the English language is long and complicated. However, there are several major milestones throughout its evolution which make it what it is today.
In c.500 BC, the Celts, the first known inhabitants of the British Isles, invaded Britain. However, they were severely subjugated when the Romans invaded in 55 BC, resulting in very little of the Celtic language remaining today.
In 45 AD the Romans conquered Britain and Latin, therefore, is an important influence on the English language. The Romans then departed Britain to attend to their depleting empire in 410 AD, making way for the Angles, the Saxons, the Jutes and the Fresians to invade in c.450. These four tribes brought with them versions of Old German and Old Danish, which helped to form our language.
C.680 saw the composition of Beowulf, which is the first narrative in the literary canon and in c.790 the Vikings invaded from Scandinavia, bringing Old Norse with them and changing the language still further.
The Battle of Hastings occurred in 1066 and resulted in William the conqueror coming to power. During his reign, all those in power spoke French and this language, therefore, strongly influences today’s English.
1375 to 1400 saw the prodigious output of Geoffrey Chaucer, one of the most influential poets of all time and in 1476 William Caxton’s printing press made written English available to everyone.
The Book of Common Prayer was published in 1549 in Latin and would have seen read in church, demonstrating how written English continued to spread.
