Although you certainly do have many choices when it comes to your career, don’t overlook a possible choice that can assist you in finding the job that you need, regardless of what the economy happens to be doing. I’m talking about nursing careers, something that many people are taking advantage of and finding a high level of success when doing so. Of course, there are some things that are going to need to be considered in order for you to improve your odds of success. After reviewing the following information, you will have a fairly good idea of what needs to be done.

First of all, you are going to need some kind of nursing degree in order to get a job in the first place. If you are already a nurse, you may want to consider looking for a college where you can get more credits in order to give yourself additional opportunities within the workplace. This is something that must be looked into very carefully in advance, particularly if you are already working. Many of us do not have the time in order to attend college regularly but online nursing programs may give us the opportunity when local campuses are out of the question. These classes can generally be taken at your convenience and although you’re still going to need to find the time in order to take them, most of us are able to do so in the off hours. Just make sure that the online program that you choose gives you the credits that are necessary to improve your odds of success.

Some people are going to want to take general classes when they attended college but for other people, it is going to be something that is very specific. Regardless of what you plan on doing when you go to college, however, you need to make some choices in advance so that you attend a school that is going to benefit you to the full. Some of those choices may require that you do a career search, looking for information about something specific that you plan on doing. You can then choose the college according to that career search, regardless of whether it is music colleges, if that is what you plan on doing or if it is radiology schools, if you plan on getting into the medical field.

There are also going to be times when you will not need to attend a college to take classes other than those that are specific to the career that you are choosing. This is the case when you plan on taking some massage courses, as they are generally very specific to individuals that want to get into massage therapy. This is a field that is in demand and it is one that you may find suits you well, particularly if you enjoy helping people with their ailments and making them feel better. Of course, there are many other colleges that you can choose as well that will assist you in making a career choice that will be fully beneficial to you. Just make sure that you take your time in making the decision so that once you are taking the classes, you can feel comfortable in the decision that you made.

When you have served actively in the military, you have benefits that are open to you which are not open to individuals that did not serve. An example of this is the GI bill, which can assist you in getting an education with financing in many different areas. In some cases, you’re not only going to be able to have your tuition paid for but you’re going to have extra expenses paid for as well. This can include receiving money in order to pay for books and other items as well as the possibility of receiving some spending money to compensate for any missed work as a result of attending classes.

What might surprise you is the fact that this bill is not only going to provide the person that served actively with an education, there are times when it can also help an Army mom to get the education that she needs. If you plan on using it for anyone outside of the person that served actively in the military, it is important for you to discuss it in advance to make sure that you are able to get the benefits that you desire. There may be other opportunities that are open to you as well, such as scholarships for military spouses that will assist in paying for the education and in some cases, may even cover the entire cost of the tuition. Of course, these are things that must be looked into in advance and you need to be timely in applying for any scholarships so that you increase your odds of receiving them.

I was 15 or so the first time I took the Scholastic Aptitude Test for college. In retrospect, I made a couple of monumental mistakes. First, I did very little, if any, studying for the test. Then, I listened to the bad advice of a classmate who told me not to answer any question I wasn’t sure on. I turned in an exam booklet with more than a few blank questions and got an 1150 out of 1600.

I suppose my score wasn’t anything to be ashamed of, falling somewhere in the average range, though I wasn’t proud either. The following year, I resolved to do things differently. My college application was at stake, and while I was good in some areas (I didn’t need a writing tutor for any of the essays), I knew my overall score needed boosting. Thus, I enrolled in an SAT prep course.

The course met for a month or so for about an hour a session outside of normal school hours. Like a young kid working with a Spanish tutor, I had seemingly all I needed to know drilled into me. We did practice analogy after analogy. We worked on the math. I think we even took a practice test. I learned things like that I actually knew a lot of this stuff already, and that if I encountered a question I wasn’t 100 percent positive on, I could render a guess and still have a decent shot at being right.

The payoff came on test day when I scored a 1320 out of 1600, my highest SAT marks ultimately. To this day, I tell everyone I can to take a prep course.

I’ve been reading so long and doing basic math for so many years that it seems like second nature to me now. But I remember what it was like before I knew the basics.

I came home disappointed after my first day of kindergarten, telling my parents, “They didn’t teach us how to read.” I don’t know where I got the idea that this would happen, and honestly I can’t even remember if I came into primary school knowing the alphabet. By first grade, though, I had a basic command of addition and subtraction, as well as simple vocabulary words. I was no prodigy, but I like to think I was reasonably well-adjusted academically.

By second grade, most of my classmates and I could do the basics, save for a few stragglers. These were the kids who needed to use their fingers to count silently during math tests, who labored arduously through reading aloud. In retrospect, I wonder if any of these kids got to see a math tutor, or if my friends and I could have helped as reading tutors instead of scoffing. It seems cruel in retrospect, and I wish altruism would’ve come more naturally to me.

In time, I got my comeuppance. I needed tutors as well, for more advanced math courses in both high school and college. Really, though, there wasn’t any shame in it. I learned that at any time, we all could use a helping hand. Some just need it sooner than others, I suppose.
